In cooperation with renowned parties in the sector, last week Fluvius Industrial Projects finalized a feasibility study related to the subject of making the Dutch inland vessel fleet ‘greener’ by upgrading (refitting) existing diesel engines with common rail technology. Issues (drivers and blocks) such as rules and regulations, technical-, economical- and financial aspects (Return On Investment), potential emission reduction and fuel savings, as well as potential environmental benefits, were addressed. In the beginning of August I spent a full week on board a container vessel alternatively sailing in both SECA – and non-SECA area. A very useful experience from a maritime-technology point of view, especially with respect to fuel operations.
